Land/scape N.1 in F.A.S.T /// Femmes Arts Sciences Technologies

11.03.2022 - 06.03.2022

U.L.B - Université Libre de Bruxelles
High Voltage Laboratory of the Ecole Polytechnique de Bruxelles, Brussels (B)

Ohme invites you to F.A.S.T. Femmes Arts Sciences Technologies, an exhibition shedding light , from an historical and artistic points of view, on the invisibilization of women in the history of art, science and technology.

Land/scape N.1 by Laura Colmenares Guerra is the first of a series of installations/sculptures, based on ongoing research that deals with the notion of landscape in relation to the Western conceptions of nature and natural. The series explores how these geopolitical concepts are found in the periphery of what we consider artificial structures or conceived by the Human. The notion of nature that arises from the relationship between aesthetics and geography involves a narrative constructed both visually and linguistically. Both logics, the representation and the categorization of the world, correspond to a utilitarian ethic. They encode, categorize a visual order and generate hierarchy.

The strategy of framing material reality transforms the environment into a mental structure through which the subject in the West establishes its relationship with the cosmos. The notion of landscape cannot be reduced to its physical reality, or to the natural sceneries it represents; it is actually extra – natural, it conveys the particular relationship between society and its environment.

tele-present wind at Mois Multi 2022

09.02.2022 - 27.02.2022

ESPACE 400E
Quebec (CA)

At first glance, tele-present wind (2018)  by David Bowen could be perceived as a plant-like oddity composed of 126 dried plant branches mounted on metal rods. This undulating symphony is actually orchestrated by the wind’s blow, the intensity of which is captured via anemometers located in Minnesota, USA. This reconstituted mini-forest, acting as the promise of a somewhat disturbing mechanical future, rises and sways in unison, giving the scene a strange aura: that of a still life yet very much alive. The sound of the moving metal rods, like leaves caressed by the breeze, reinforces the organic spirit of the installation. tele-present wind is in fact a shifted representation of fluid dynamics, the main subject here being the observation of the movement of wind.

DEMO

01.02.2022 - 01.03.2022

Kris Verdonck / A Two Dogs Company
Brussels (B)

DEMO is Kris Verdonck's first short film.
(in production)

The starting point for this film project is the performance UNTITLED, a show by Kris Verdonck / A Two Dogs Company that premiered at the Kaaitheater in 2014. DEMO follows the genre of silent film, slapstick, musical and cartoons, as well as the style of the numerous uploads on YouTube and other social media.

DEMO is a social and absurdist portrait of Bee, an artist looking for work. Bee is homeless, lives under a bridge in the Brussels Canal Zone and is dressed as a mascot.  He makes videos of himself with his smartphone and hopes to one day find an audience. His main activity is boredom, an existential boredom, he just doesn't know what to do.

In DEMO, we follow Bee's path and his stunts for two days and three nights. His tricks are aimless and nonsensical, and as the days progress his existence begins to weigh on him. His surroundings - a clash of banks, art institutions, homeless people, refugees, expensive apartments and drug addicts - are indifferent. He is part of the scenery that nevertheless defines him and in which he simultaneously disappears. The enthusiasm with which he tries to entertain becomes increasingly extreme, wry and dangerous, to the point of being suicidal. Suicide is unfortunately not an option, cartoon characters don't die, they rise again and again.

Bee lives in a harsh reality and - just because of that - also in his imagination, in his madness and hallucinations. His big dream is to perform for an audience in one of the great art houses on the canal, Kaaitheater and KANAL - Centre Pompidou. There is much that stands in the way of the realization of this dream, not least his poor artistic skills. He thinks he knows great tricks, but in reality it doesn't amount to much, he fails or things go wrong.

growth rendering device
This system provides light and food in the form of hydroponic solution for the plant. The plant reacts to the device by growing. The device in-turn reacts to the plant by producing a rasterized inkjet drawing of the plant every twenty-four hours. After a new drawing is produced the system scrolls the roll of paper approximately four inches so a new drawing can be produced during the next cycle. The system runs indefinitely and the final outcome is not predetermined.

Europalia Trains & Tracks: Lost & Found

15.11.2021 - 03.12.2021

Central Station
Brussels & Antwerp (B)

The history of our continent is largely the outcome of the overwhelming need of human beings to travel and the perpetual movement it generates. As vessels of this human movement, train stations are home to the many stories brought about by the flows of travellers that pass through them and the small and large events that take place there. Lost & Found aims to establish a dialogue between the train stations and the variety of local stories that live there - from intimately personal accounts to public matters. Mini operas developed over the course of several days will transform these stories into audio, visual and kinetic experiences for passers-by and travellers.

For one week, the audience will be able to not only witness the opera's creation, but they will also be able to participate in it. A local team of artists (librettists, composers, dramaturges) will collect local stories from passers-by and translate them into operas. The artists will work together in a creative space - a transparent cube installed inside the train station -  from which they will be able to observe what is happening outside and through which passers-by will be able to witness the creative process in real time. Each day, a performance based on the interactions of that day will be put on. The final composition will bring together these daily operas and take the form of an extended performance through which musicians and singers will share the result of this experience.

The musical director of this project is Benjamin Haemhouts, artistic director of the Belgian chamber orchestra Casco Phil. The stage crew is led by the international theatre production company Muziektheater Transparant. In co-production with Perpodium. Among the selected artists are Annelies Van Parys (composer), Gaea Schoeters (librettist) and Fanny Gilbert-Collet (director).

Piano is not Dead

cloud piano plays the keys of a piano based on the movements and shapes of the clouds. A camera pointed at the sky captures video of the clouds. Custom software uses the video of the clouds in real-time to articulate a robotic device that presses the corresponding keys on the piano. The system is set in motion to function as if the clouds are pressing the keys on the piano as they move across the sky and change shape. The resulting sound is generated from the unique key patterns created by ethereal forms that build, sweep, fluctuate and dissipate in the sky.

THE LOST ONES (after Samuel Beckett)

THE LOST ONES
(after Samuel Beckett)

An Architecture of Loss

In Samuel Beckett's The Lost Ones, characters search for their lost ones in a space without an exit. They seem to follow unwritten rules. They are the result of the architecture and dynamics of their surroundings. This environment has something hellish: space, light and sound have a merciless effect on the seekers. Their search seems futile: recognition and memory are absent in this world. And yet they continue: nonsensically, bored, playfully, madly, endlessly.

One could also look at it another way: maybe the figures are not so much the seekers as the ones who are being sought, the ones who are missed. Like silhouettes in a white space, they are the holes in our emotional architecture. Somewhere in our memory, in our body, these 'lost ones' wander. They are connections that are no longer made but that are still sought. The world of The Lost Ones is then an architecture of lack, of a loss and longing for something absent that rages through the brain and the body. The figures' absurd searching in this environment is a consequence of that longing and missing. As long as we yearn for them, the people we miss are lost - in us. In the same way, we ourselves may be both seekers and seekers. Will this circle ever be completed, will this desire ever be at rest? Or is it rather like two parallel lines and do the paths of seeker and sought only cross in infinity?
